MAIN RESEARCH THEME: EXPLORING PRAGUE'S POSITION IN GLOBALISATION, DEGLOBALISATION, AND LOCALISATION.

Prague, the vibrant capital of the Czech Republic, occupies a crucial position in the evolving landscape of globalisation and deglobalisation. Its strategic central location in Europe serves as a bridge between Western and Eastern Europe, making it a vital transit hub for goods, people, and ideas. This geographic advantage allows Prague to easily access a wide range of markets across the continent, facilitating efficient transportation and logistics. The city’s central position not only reduces the time and costs associated with shipping goods but also attracts significant foreign direct investment (FDI) as businesses seek to establish a strategic base for their European operations.

Additionally, Prague’s central location fosters innovation by placing it at the crossroads of diverse markets and cultures, encouraging the exchange of ideas, technologies, and best practices. This dynamic environment enhances Prague’s role as a center for research and development (R&D) and technological collaboration. Furthermore, being in the heart of Europe and integrated into the European Union (EU), Prague benefits from seamless cooperation on R&D projects and adherence to high standards in corporate social responsibility (CSR), including environmental sustainability and ethical practices.

The combination of its central location, robust infrastructure, and EU integration provides Prague with significant advantages for trade, innovation, and CSR, positioning it as a critical hub for international business amidst evolving global dynamics. This research theme explores how Prague leverages these strengths to navigate the complexities of globalisation and deglobalisation, solidifying its role as a key player in the global economy.

As a participant in the ESR program, you will be divided into five subgroups to conduct research on the theme “Exploring Prague’s Position in Globalisation, Deglobalisation, and Localisation.” Each subgroup will focus on a specific subtheme related to Prague’s economic landscape. These subthemes will guide your research questions and ensure a thorough exploration of the main theme.

Throughout the program, you will develop essential business research skills, including creating theoretical frameworks and conceptual models. Working closely with your subgroup, you will have the opportunity to discuss your findings during lectures and receive feedback from the committee and professors.

The final deliverable will be a comprehensive research paper, including recommendations from each subgroup, which will be presented to the companies and organizations we will visit in Prague. To provide a detailed examination of the main research theme, we have established the following five subthemes:

Each subgroup will delve into these subthemes to provide a comprehensive understanding of Prague’s strategic position in the global economy.

1. Impact of Trade Policies and Competitiveness

2. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability

3. Digitalisation and Innovation

4. Risk Management and Adaptation Strategies

5. Export and Supply Chain Strategies

Impact of Trade Policies and Competitiveness

The evolving global trade landscape directly impacts Prague's competitiveness. While EU integration has facilitated trade by providing a stable regulatory environment, it has also introduced complex compliance requirements. Changes in trade policies, such as new tariffs or trade agreements, can significantly affect Prague-based businesses, compelling them to develop strategic responses to remain competitive.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability

In Prague, there is a growing emphasis on CSR and sustainability, driven by both regulatory requirements and consumer expectations. Businesses are increasingly incorporating sustainable practices into their operations, such as focusing on green building and energy efficiency. These initiatives not only contribute to environmental goals but also enhance business reputation and customer loyalty, aligning with Prague's commitment to sustainable development.

Digitalisation and Innovation

Digitalisation and innovation are key drivers of Prague's economic growth and resilience. Businesses in Prague are increasingly adopting digital tools and technologies to enhance operational efficiency and maintain a competitive edge. The city's supportive government policies, access to talent, and collaborative networks make it an ideal environment for innovation, fostering the growth of tech startups and contributing to the local economy.

Risk Management and Adaptation Strategies

Effective risk management is crucial for businesses in Prague to navigate the uncertainties associated with globalisation and deglobalisation. Companies are adopting comprehensive strategies to mitigate risks related to global economic shifts, geopolitical tensions, and regulatory changes. Diversification, strategic partnerships, and robust compliance frameworks are some of the strategies employed by Prague-based businesses to enhance their resilience.

Export and Supply Chain Strategies

As global trade dynamics shift, businesses in Prague are adapting their export and supply chain strategies to ensure resilience and flexibility. Focusing on local and regional supply chains, exploring new markets, and enhancing logistical capabilities are key strategies to mitigate trade barriers and economic disruptions. By strengthening their supply chains and export capabilities, Prague-based companies are better positioned to navigate the complexities of the global market.
