About the International Development Project

The International Development Project (IDP), organised by EBF Groningen in collaboration with the University of Groningen and Stellenbosch University, offers 15 selected students the opportunity to conduct international research in South Africa.

The project combines academic preparation, practical research experience and international travel. Participants will spend four weeks in South Africa, with the first two weeks dedicated to field research and the remaining two weeks offering the opportunity to independently explore the country, its culture, economy and business environment.

The trip will take place from 18 April to 17 May 2027, with departure from South Africa on 16 May and arrival back in Groningen on 17 May 2027.

Research in South Africa

The research will be conducted in collaboration with Stellenbosch University and will focus on a topic aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Located in South Africa’s Western Cape, approximately 50 kilometres from Cape Town, Stellenbosch is a university town known for its academic environment, vineyards, mountainous surroundings and vibrant student life.

During the first two weeks in South Africa, participants will conduct field research in cooperation with local organisations, including companies, NGOs and SMEs. Working in smaller research groups, students will have the opportunity to collect data, engage with local stakeholders and apply their academic knowledge in an international setting.

The research period will conclude with a final presentation of the findings before participants begin their independent travels.

Academic Preparation – 5 ECTS

To prepare for the research project, participants will complete a seven-week preparation course worth 5 ECTS, organised in collaboration with the University of Groningen.

The course will provide the academic background, research methods and practical skills necessary to conduct field research in South Africa.

Alongside the weekly lectures, participants will take part in Monday socials and group dinners, offering the opportunity to get to know their fellow participants and committee members before departure.

Four Weeks in South Africa

Following the preparation programme, participants will travel to South Africa for four weeks.

Weeks 1–2: Field Research in Stellenbosch

Students will work on their research projects, collaborate with local organisations and experience an international academic and professional environment.

Weeks 3–4: Independent Travel

After completing the research, participants will have two weeks to explore South Africa independently. This offers the opportunity to discover different regions, experience the country’s cultural diversity and gain a broader understanding of South African society and its economic environment.

After returning to Groningen, the project will conclude with a celebratory event bringing together participants and the committee.

Participation Fee

The participation fee for IDP 2027 is €1,500 per person.

This includes return flights between Amsterdam and South Africa, accommodation during the first two research weeks and transportation associated with the research programme.
