FAQ International Development Project

Maybe you have seen it on the socials, the website or you have joined the information meeting already. The EBF announced a new big project this year, namely, the International Development Project! Maybe you have seen it however, a lot of questions might pop into your head! That is why we made a list with frequently asked questions in order to help you a little bit!

What are the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations?
The Sustainable Development Goals provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

What is the time frame for of the project?
The International Development Project will take place in May 2024, in this period you will travel to South-Africa to do research and explore the beautiful country. However before this trip there is also a 7 week period in which you will follow the course and get to know the other participants.
If you join the IDP committee, then the time frame is a little different. Besides what was mentioned before, you will have a committee year which will already start in May of 2023. This is because the committee is responsible for organizing the trip!

What is the difference between joining IDP as a committee member or as a participant?
As a IDP participant you follow the course and conduct the research during your time in South-Africa. As the IDP committee, you not only follow the course and do research but you are also responsible for the trip itself, this includes a lot of different things. But some of the main committee tasks are: Logistics, acquisition, contact with different stakeholders both in Groningen as well as in Stellenbosch, recruitment of the participants and also keeping in touch with the participants and making sure all participants get along are responsibilities of the committee.

How much time does the IDP committee cost?
We expect it to take between 10 and 20 hours a week! However because this is a new project we don’t know exactly how much. But in general you can expect the workload to increase as the trip gets closer!

What kind of companies will we be working with in South-Africa?
In South Africa you will be working together with local entrepreneurs or NGO’s. These local entrepreneurs are connected to the Stellenbosch business school. This way you get the opportunity to do research in South-Africa with actual positive impact on the local community.

Why should I join the IDP Committee?
Because the IDP committee provides the unique opportunity of organizing a international trip to South Africa, while helping local companies conduct research! Besides the research trip you and your committee will have the opportunity to explore South Africa together and make friend for a lifetime!
